Martina Dawn – Me

Martina Dawn is a fourteen-year-old singer from the small town of Devon, Alberta, but she’s been wowing crowds around North American for the last two years. Martina Dawn has performed in venues such as Nashville’s Tootsies, Honky Tonk Grill, The Country Music Hall of Fame, and in Memphis at the famous Graceland. Closer to home, she was a Semi Finalist for this years KDays Talent Competition, and a Finalist for both the Big Valley Jamboree’s ATB Homegrown Talent Competition and the Ponoka Stampede Talent Competition. Martina Dawn has always had a great love for music; she has been singing practically her entire life, and as the daughter of Kym Simon, she started taking vocal lessons at the age of five. “I started doing my own solo gigs when I was 12. My passion was largely encourage by my mother, as well as other family members, because my family is full of musical talent.” Their encouragement is certainly paying off as Martina Dawn works toward her goals and is currently nominated for the Horizon Youth Award for the Association of Country Music in Alberta (ACMA).

In addition to singing, Martina Dawn plays the piano and guitar. Though she loves playing both instruments, her main point of focus and education is her voice. Her plans after school involve singing, acting, and staying in the music industry. “After I graduate high school, I would like to pursue a music career being a singer/entertainer and even act a little bit. However, if that does not work out I would like to stay in the entertainment industry in some way, like becoming a manager or entertainment lawyer.”

Though Martina Dawn does not write her own songs yet, she already has a knack for choosing pieces that speak not only to her, but to her fans. “Me”, written by Kym Simon and Steve Fox, is a touching and inspirational ballad about the bullying epidemic and one young woman’s fight to not only accept herself, but embrace every part of herself. Sure, Carrie Underwood could sing this song, but part of what makes this ballad particularly powerful is the fact that a fourteen-year-old is the one doing the singing. Martina Dawn brings a unique strength to the song with her own acceptance of self and her wild eyed, whole hearted confidence and passion. Someone record this young woman; every teenager in the world needs to hear this song.
