Tyra Madison is no stranger to the stage. She began her singing career at the tender age of four, where she would attend the local “Pickin’ and Grinnin’ with her papaw. This time spent with bluegrass musicians, including her papaw and uncle, really shaped Tyra’s love for music. After winning her school talent show in Kindergarten by singing “You are My Sunshine” a cappella, this sealed the deal. Tyra then knew she wanted to be a “singer on the stage”.
Being from a one stop light town, Tyra performed anywhere she could from festivals, schools, sporting events, benefits, etc. When Tyra was twelve, she was chosen as a vocalist to perform in the prestigious Kentucky Opry Junior Pros. This opportunity allowed Tyra to hone her stage presence and let her attitude and sass shine. During her teen years, Tyra’s other interests included nine years spent with the regional theater and six years on a competition dance team.
Also around this time, Tyra developed a love for song writing and began traveling back and forth to Nashville. In this moment, Tyra was noticed by talent scouts and was chosen to be in the cast of a Lifetime reality show, “Chasing Nashville.” A big mile stone for Tyra was releasing her first EP Firestarter and opening for Maddie and Tae. Tyra is now in her senior year as a Commercial Voice major, music business minor in the Belmont School of Music.
Tyra Madison is currently working on her second EP, she recently released the first single “Ain’t No Dime.” Influenced by Carrie Underwood and Maren Morris, Tyra’s goal is to be another strong female force in the country music industry….not bad of a dream for a small town eastern Kentucky girl. We had the chance to catch up with Tyra for a Rapid Fire Round Interview!
If you could choose one person, alive or not, to play a concert with, who would it be and why?
Taylor Swift! I feel like she would be an amazing tour mate because she is so authentic and kind. When you go to watch Taylor, it is a SHOW. Lights, sets and all. She is my definition of the ultimate entertainer.
What is your favorite television show/movie?
My favorite TV show is (really basic but) either One Tree Hill or Gossip Girl. My favorite movie is Legally Blonde. I love the message of the movie because it inspires you to always be yourself, to never change and go after what you want in life!
What is your strangest/most embarrassing show or tour experience?
One show during the summer, I was being attacked by a swarm of bees. Did I keep singing while swatting at bees? Of course I did. Showbiz baby!
Do you have a dream venue to play?
My DREAM is to play the Opry.
When and where do you do your best writing?
I do my best songwriting at home! I’ve found the more comfortable I am, the more vulnerable I can be for songwriting.
Did you have a musical mentor when you got started? What is the most important thing they taught you?
When I was younger my musical mentors were my grandfather and my uncle. My papaw played the harmonica, my uncle played the guitar and I would sing. They taught me to always believe in myself as they believed in me. I thank them for being two of my musical inspirations.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
On a day off, I enjoy watching Netflix or a movie with my roommates and cuddling my dog.
Where do you turn for inspiration or comfort when life in the industry gets overwhelming?
I turn to all the artists that got told no. They say Carrie Underwood didn’t win a talent show until American Idol (WHAT). That inspires me to keep going and fight for my dream!
What’s the one song (from any artist) you wish you had written or sung first?
I wish I had written and sung first is “Once” by Maren Morris. The song is perfect for my range and I love the powerful soul and rawness of the song.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be?
I would like to be an actress. I grew up performing in theater so I have a love for entertaining. If not a performer, I would be a vet or marine biologist. I have always had a love for animals so to take care of them would not only be fun but would be an amazing feeling!
